The Maharashtra government has declared a local holiday for all government and semi-government offices in Mumbai and the suburban districts on December 6, 2024, to commemorate Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Mahaparinirvan Diwas. This announcement is in accordance with the guidelines specified in the General Administration Department’s circular from September 18, 1996.

The official circular states that Mumbai has had local holidays every year for Anant Chaturdashi and Gopalkala (Dahi Handi) since 2007. The upcoming holiday for Dr. Ambedkar Mahaparinirvan Diwas will be the third local holiday in 2024 for the area.

The holiday is applicable to all state government and semi-government offices located in Mumbai and the suburban districts. This order is issued based on Government Resolution No. P&S. P-13/II/B, dated November 5, 1958.

The official circular can be found on the Maharashtra government’s website www.maharashtra.gov.in under reference number 202412041118267307. It has been digitally signed and issued by the Governor of Maharashtra.

The observance of Mahaparinirvan Diwas commemorates the death anniversary of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, who was the principal architect of the Indian Constitution and an important social reformer. This day is honored with tributes and various commemorative events throughout the state.

In preparation for Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar’s 68th death anniversary, Mahaparinirvan Diwas, the Mumbai Traffic Police have released a traffic advisory that will be in effect from December 5 to 7. This advisory is designed to manage the expected large crowds at Chaitya Bhoomi in Shivaji Park, Dadar, where thousands of followers are likely to come to pay their respects.

The flow of vehicles around Dadar is expected to be impacted because of the large number of visitors. To reduce any inconvenience, the police have advised drivers to adhere to the designated diversions and to use public transport whenever possible. These traffic arrangements are intended to provide a smooth and organized experience for those attending the commemorative events at Shivaji Park.
