Massive road and mobility projects approved to cut travel time, boost connectivity and drive economic growth across the state

Maharashtra is set for a major transformation in road and transport infrastructure with projects worth Rs 1.5 lakh crore receiving approval, marking one of the biggest infrastructure pushes in the state’s history. The investment covers highways, expressways and urban mobility corridors and is expected to significantly improve connectivity, reduce travel time and strengthen the state’s economic engine.

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari announced the approvals, highlighting that the focus is on building faster, safer and more efficient transport links across key regions, including Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur and central Maharashtra. The projects aim to address long-standing issues such as traffic congestion, logistics delays and uneven regional development.

One of the most significant projects is the Pune–Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar greenfield expressway, which has received approval at an estimated cost of Rs 16,318 crore. The highway is expected to dramatically improve connectivity between western and central Maharashtra, offering a quicker and safer route for commuters, freight movement and long-distance travel.

In addition, the first phase of the Pune–Sambhajinagar highway alone is estimated to cost around Rs 2,000 crore and will include multiple flyovers and interchanges designed to ensure smooth traffic flow and reduce bottlenecks. Once completed, the corridor is expected to play a key role in industrial growth and regional development.

The infrastructure plan also includes several elevated road corridors in the Pune Metropolitan Region. These projects are aimed at easing urban congestion, improving daily commuting and enhancing connectivity between major residential and commercial hubs. Elevated corridors such as the Talegaon–Chakan–Shikrapur stretch are expected to provide uninterrupted traffic flow and reduce travel delays within city limits.

Another major project approved under the package is the Nashik Phata–Khed corridor, with a total estimated cost of Rs 7,800 crore. This corridor will be executed in phases and is designed to improve commuter safety, reduce travel time and strengthen freight movement between key industrial zones.

Further strengthening the road network, the Alandi Phata–Khed stretch has also received approval at an estimated cost of Rs 3,398 crore. The project is expected to ease congestion on existing roads and improve connectivity for both passenger and commercial vehicles.

According to officials, once the new highway projects are completed, travel time between Pune and Sambhajinagar is expected to reduce to around two hours, while the journey from Sambhajinagar to Nagpur could be completed in approximately 2.5 hours. Overall, Pune-to-Nagpur travel time is expected to come down to about six hours, delivering major time and fuel savings for commuters.

Beyond faster travel, the Rs 1.5 lakh crore investment is expected to have a ripple effect on Maharashtra’s economy. Improved road infrastructure is likely to attract new investments, support tourism, enhance logistics efficiency and generate employment during both construction and operational phases.

With multiple highways, expressways, flyovers and urban mobility projects moving forward, Maharashtra is positioning itself as a leader in modern transport infrastructure, laying the foundation for long-term economic growth and improved quality of life for its citizens.
