In a landmark decision, the Maharashtra government on Tuesday approved projects worth over ₹5,500 crore, with a major focus on the renovation and restoration of prominent religious sites including Tulja Bhavani Temple (₹1,865 crore)Jyotiba Temple (₹259 crore)Trimbakeshwar Temple (₹275 crore), and Kolhapur’s Mahalakshmi Temple (₹1,445 crore). The approvals came during a special cabinet meeting held for the first time in a rural area—Chondi village in Ahilyanagar district, the birthplace of Maratha warrior queen Ahilyadevi Holkar, in honor of her 300th birth anniversary.

Additionally, the cabinet sanctioned ₹681 crore for the conservation and renovation of the Ahilyadevi Holkar memorial in Chondi. Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated, “This is our way of paying tribute to Ahilyadevi’s contribution in restoring temples destroyed by invaders. Taking inspiration from her, we are undertaking this temple restoration initiative across Maharashtra.”

The government also approved ₹829 crore for the development of Mahurgad, and ₹147 crore for renovations of all Ashtavinayak Ganapati temples.

The cabinet session, attended by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy Chief Ministers Ajit Pawar and Fadnavis, ministers, bureaucrats, and department officials, was held after offering tributes at Ahilyadevi’s memorial.

In other announcements, the chief minister said a new government medical college will be established in Ahilyanagar and named after Ahilyadevi Holkar. He also declared the Yashwant Vidyarthi Scheme, under which 10,000 students from the Dhangar community will receive education in reputed schools. The first phase will also see hostels for Dhangar boys and girls set up in Pune and Nagpur divisions.
