The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rain alert for Mumbai and Thane, effective July 28. Despite the ongoing severe weather conditions, the IMD has not issued an orange alert for any Maharashtra districts from July 28 to 30, and no warnings are expected for Mumbai starting July 29.

In Pune, the IMD has issued an orange alert for heavy rainfall until July 31. Around 3,000 residents have been relocated to temporary shelters. The Pune civic body has warned those living in low-lying areas along the Pavana and Mula rivers to stay vigilant. Shivajinagar recorded 114.1 mm of rainfall in July, marking it as the third-highest monthly rainfall in the city’s history. Pune’s highest recorded rainfall was 181.1 mm on October 10, 2010.

Continuous heavy rainfall has caused widespread flooding, building collapses, traffic disruptions, and power outages across the region. Rescue operations are in progress to assist those in waterlogged areas. Mumbai’s water levels have surged past 70 percent in the city’s seven lakes as of July 27, reflecting a 5 percent increase from the previous day, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The relentless downpour has led to significant waterlogging, impacting daily life and prompting advisories for residents to prepare for ongoing inclement weather.

Forecasts indicate that Mumbai will experience only moderate showers from Monday through Wednesday. Between Friday and Saturday morning, BMC data recorded 20 incidents including tree collapses, partial house collapses, and short circuits. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.

In Kolhapur, Western Maharashtra, over 5,800 people have been evacuated as the Panchganga River exceeds the danger mark. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has instructed the district administration to coordinate with Karnataka officials regarding water discharge from the Almatti Dam. Two teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and an Indian Army team have been deployed to assist in the flood-affected areas.
