PUNE: Following recent torrential rains, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has issued an urgent advisory recommending that residents boil tap water before consumption. This precaution comes in response to reports of muddy tap water, which has raised concerns about the potential spread of waterborne diseases.

Nandkishor Jatap, Chief Superintendent Engineer of PMC’s Water Supply Department, emphasized the importance of taking extra health measures. “While the PMC is committed to supplying clean water, we advise citizens to boil and filter their drinking water as a precautionary measure,” Jatap stated.

The advisory was released on Friday in light of the increased risk of diseases such as diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, typhoid fever, and hepatitis, which can result from consuming contaminated water. Dr. Suryakant Deokar, Assistant Health Officer at PMC, highlighted the importance of vigilance. “Contaminated water and poor sanitation can lead to serious health issues. In case of an outbreak, residents should contact ASHA workers, health workers, or visit PMC health centers.”

Dr. Kalpana Baliwant, Deputy Health Officer at PMC, advised residents to seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as diarrhea, dysentery, chills, or fever. She also stressed the need for maintaining clean water storage facilities. “Ensure that both underground and overhead water tanks are regularly cleaned, repair any leaks in taps or valves, and maintain cleanliness around these areas,” she added.
