Maharashtra State Government Faces Criticism Over ₹24 Crore SMS Alert Expenditure
The Maharashtra state government has approved a whopping ₹23.78 crore for sending SMS alerts to citizens about decisions made during weekly cabinet meetings. This move aims to increase public awareness of government decisions, but it has sparked controversy.
The Directorate of Information and Public Relations submitted the proposal, which was greenlit by the General Administration Department. The department mandated that the institution determination process be carried out through e-tendering from recognized DAVP-listed institutions, ensuring compliance with government directives, financial rules, and regulations.
However, Right to Information activist and Aam Aadmi Party state vice-president Vijay Kumbhar has questioned the decision. Kumbhar alleges that the government is prioritizing contractor interests over transparency, labeling the initiative a “loving contractor” scheme.
Kumbhar estimates that ₹40-50 lakh will be spent weekly, assuming 60 meetings are held annually. With 52 cabinet meetings held weekly, the annual expenditure could be substantial. This raises concerns about the necessity and effectiveness of the initiative.
The government’s intention to enhance transparency and communication has been overshadowed by concerns about potential benefits for contractors. As the state moves forward with this plan, the debate surrounding its justification and effectiveness is likely to continue.
Critics argue that alternative, more cost-effective methods could achieve the same goal, such as utilizing social media or government websites. The controversy highlights the need for greater transparency and accountability in government spending decisions.
