A woman who went missing three decades ago following the tragic loss of her 13-year-old son has been reunited with her family, thanks to the relentless efforts of staff at Thane Mental Hospital, an official reported on Wednesday.

The woman, a resident of Ahmednagar district, vanished after her son suffered a fatal electric shock while climbing a tamarind tree. Overcome with grief, she left home in distress and remained missing for years, said Dr. Netaji Mulik, superintendent of Thane Mental Hospital.

Rescue and Rehabilitation

The woman eventually ended up in Nashik, where she wandered the Panchvati area for several years. Two years ago, local police found her in a deteriorated physical and mental state. Recognizing her memory loss, authorities transferred her to Thane Mental Hospital for medical care and rehabilitation.

Under extensive treatment, her condition gradually improved, prompting hospital staff to begin tracing her origins. However, due to her fragmented memory, identifying her family proved challenging, Dr. Mulik explained.

Despite initial difficulties, hospital officials managed to gather crucial details about her hometown. Collaborating with Ahmednagar police, they successfully located her relatives nearly 250 km away.

On January 17, the woman’s long-lost family—including her daughter-in-law, cousins, and nephews—visited the hospital for an emotional reunion.

“We are deeply moved by the dedication and compassion of the medical team,” her family expressed.

Following the reunion, the woman was taken back to Ahmednagar, marking the end of her 30-year separation.

This remarkable case highlights the critical role of medical institutions and law enforcement in reuniting lost individuals with their families, offering hope to many others in similar situations.
