Amritsar, December 4, 2024: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief and former Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal narrowly escaped an assassination attempt at the Golden Temple. A man, identified as Narain Singh, fired at Badal while he was serving penance at the temple’s entrance.

Badal, seated in a wheelchair and dressed in a blue sewadar uniform, was performing duties mandated by the Akal Takht as penance related to a 2015 sacrilege case. The bullet missed its target and struck a wall. Bystanders quickly overpowered the attacker, preventing further harm.

Footage from the incident shows Badal holding a spear near the gate of the sacred site. The shooter, reportedly a middle-aged man, approached Badal with a concealed firearm. A vigilant bystander noticed the threat and intervened, grabbing the man’s hand before he could cause serious injury.

Police Investigation Underway

Narain Singh, now in police custody, is being interrogated to ascertain the motive behind the attack. Security at the Golden Temple has been heightened in response to the incident.

Context of Badal’s Penance

Sukhbir Singh Badal is currently serving as a sewadar at the Golden Temple, performing duties such as cleaning in the kitchen and toilets. This punishment was imposed by the Akal Takht after he was found guilty of favoring Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, a controversial figure linked to the 2015 sacrilege of the Guru Granth Sahib.

This shocking incident has drawn widespread condemnation and raised questions about the security of prominent leaders at religious sites.
