On November 30, Pune witnessed the sixth edition of the Meri Raaten, Meri Sadak (My Nights, My Streets) campaign, an initiative by the Women’s Awakening Committee (Mahila Jagar Samiti). The event emphasized women’s right to safe and equal access to public spaces at night, challenging the societal notion that streets belong only to men after dark.

With slogans like “These streets are as much ours as they are yours,” women took to the streets at night to reclaim their right to public spaces. The sixth night of this initiative was dedicated to honoring women freedom fighters who played a pivotal role in shaping India’s history but whose contributions have often gone unrecognized.

Honoring Women in the Freedom Struggle

The event paid tribute to courageous women such as Rani Lakshmibai, Matangini Hazra, and Indira Gandhi, symbolizing bravery, courage, and determination. Exhibitions and posters highlighted their sacrifices and participation in the independence movement, alongside their roles in framing the Indian Constitution.

Addressing Gender Disparity

The campaign draws attention to how streets become symbols of gender discrimination after dusk. By walking the streets at night, participants sent a strong message: public spaces should be safe and accessible for everyone, regardless of gender or time.

Collaborative Effort

The event brought together several organizations, including Abhivyakti, Varasa Social Foundation, Gulabo Gang, Hum Bharat Ke Log, Vachan Sadhana Granthalaya, Pehel Foundation, Milun Sarya Jani, Saguna Mahila Sanghatana, Sanyukt Stree Sanstha, Maharashtra Mahila Vikas Manch, Kourang Foundation, Rashtriya Majdoor Sangh Mahila Aghadi, Akshara Centre (Mumbai), and many others. This collective effort reflects a shared vision of equality, freedom, and empowerment for women.

A Continuing Mission

As the campaign grows, it reminds society that women deserve equal rights to freedom, safety, and inclusion in all public spaces. It is a movement towards creating a more equitable and secure environment for all.
