Pune, October 25, 2024 – If you frequently travel by auto-rickshaw in Mumbai, a new warning from the Mumbai Traffic Police is crucial for you. In a recent video shared on their official social media accounts, the police have highlighted the growing issue of rickshaw meter fraud and how passengers can avoid falling victim to it.

Many passengers often face problems with auto drivers overcharging or taking longer routes. A more serious issue is the manipulation of the rickshaw meter, where the fare seems to rise unusually fast. The Mumbai Traffic Police’s video shows how some drivers tamper with the meter, allowing it to run faster than normal, even while stationary.

The scam involves a hidden button behind the rickshaw’s handle that accelerates the meter’s fare calculation. As soon as the driver activates this button, a small dot begins blinking next to the fare amount on the meter, indicating manipulation. The video advises passengers to watch for this blinking dot and report any suspicious activity to the nearest RTO office, including the rickshaw’s number.

Mumbai Traffic Police has urged citizens to stay vigilant with the message: “Be Aware!” They’ve assured that legal actions, including FIRs and vehicle seizures, will be taken against drivers caught tampering with meters. The police also addressed suggestions from the public to adopt app-based meters like Ola and Uber for greater transparency.
