Mumbai Woman Tracks Snatched Phone in Varanasi, Leads Police to Recover 12 Stolen Devices
Amid the bustling crowd at Varanasi’s iconic Assi Ghat, a daring mobile snatching incident turned into an impressive display of persistence and tech-savvy by a visiting tourist from Mumbai. Ankita Gupta, a software engineer from Ghatkopar, was targeted by an unidentified thief while exploring the popular riverside spot with her family last week.
According to local authorities, the thief exploited the dense crowd at the ghat to snatch Gupta’s mobile phone. Frustrated by the lack of immediate action, Gupta didn’t wait passively. With the support of her friends and her own technical expertise, she traced the device’s location to a house in the Manduadih area and promptly informed the police.
Sudhir Kumar Tripathi, Station House Officer of Bhelupur, confirmed that based on Gupta’s tip, a police team reached the location and recovered not only her mobile phone but also 12 other stolen phones, indicating the presence of an organized theft network in the area.
Following the recovery, Deputy Commissioner of Police Gaurav Kumar ordered an inquiry into the handling of the initial complaint. The investigation revealed negligence on the part of the in-charge of the Assi police outpost, who failed to respond with the required urgency. As a result, the officer was suspended on January 4. Police officials added that the ongoing investigation aims to identify and apprehend other individuals involved in the stolen phone racket.
