The 21st Livestock Census, a nationwide initiative to evaluate the country’s livestock, is set to begin in Mumbai from September to December. This census, a joint effort between the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the state government’s Animal Husbandry Department, will involve door-to-door visits across the city.

Dr. Shailesh Pethe, Deputy Commissioner of Animal Husbandry in Mumbai, has urged housing society office-bearers and managing committees to grant access to enumerators. This will ensure accurate data collection from all households in the city and help in the effective planning and management of animal resources.

The census aims to collect comprehensive data on domestic animals and birds from every household. Enumerators will cover all municipal wards and villages, counting various species such as cattle, buffaloes, sheep, goats, poultry, dogs, and more. They will also gather information on the breed, age, and sex of these animals.

In addition to domestic pets, the census will include a survey of stray animals. Data will be collected from local residents and watchmen in various housing colonies throughout the city.
