Pune: The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has recently added four hazardous material (Hazmat) vehicles to its fleet. These vehicles, developed by Bharat Electronics, will greatly enhance the NDRF’s ability to respond effectively to chemical and radiological emergencies.

During the inauguration ceremony, Atul Karwal, NDRF Director General, introduced the vehicles and highlighted their capabilities. He emphasized, ”These vehicles are equipped to withstand biological, chemical, and nuclear attacks. In the event of such an attack, the vehicles will be able to operate in the affected area. The vehicles are also equipped with antennas to assess the nature and severity of the attack. Additionally, they have mechanisms to repel these attacks. The cost of these vehicles, developed specifically for the NDRF by Bharat Electronics is Rs 15 crore.”

The NDRF plays a crucial role in organizing summits across the country, and these vehicles will be instrumental in supporting the Delhi police and doctors in handling hazardous biochemicals. The vehicles have been designed and manufactured by Bharat Electronics’ Pune unit, which is a Navratna Defense unit. The NDRF had issued a tender for chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear vehicles in January 2023, and the vehicles were required to be delivered before August 31, within a six-month timeframe.
