Several students in the newly-opened Savitridevi Phule Girls Hostel in Bandra have raised concerns about the unclean, contaminated water supply for the past two weeks.

Following this, the administration called for a water tanker so that students could get drinkable water, however, bathrooms and other facilities still continue to flow with murky, unclean water. Additionally, the warden of the hostel, Dr. Deepali Pawar, said that the administration is working to resolve the situation.

It is pertinent to note that two days ago, Maharashtra’s higher and technical education minister, Chandrakant Patil, inspected hostels run by the department.

The hostel run by Maharashtra’s Higher and Technical Education department houses close to 100 female students pursuing various higher education courses in Mumbai.

This facility began earlier this year in February, and this is only the second batch of student residents to be housed in this hostel.

Along with officers from the department, Patil visited two hostels in Churchgate, Telang Memorial Girls Hostel and Matoshree Boys Hostel, to interact with students and understand their issues, including basic facilities such as water supply.

Savitridevi Phule Girls Hostel was originally located on Charni Road. However, after the building was declared unfit for habitation, the facility was shifted to the government colony area in Bandra where a new hostel was built. Until the new Charni Road building is ready, Savitridevi Phule Girls Hostel will continue residing in this building.

A similar incident occurred in April where more than 50 students residing in the New Girls Hostel at the University of Mumbai’s (MU) Kalina campus reported cases of stomach ache and diarrhoea raising concerns about their well-being.
