No More Doubts: FASTag Confirms Toll-Free Travel for Light Motor Vehicles in Mumbai
A day after the government announced a complete toll waiver for light motor vehicles at all five toll booths in Mumbai, many commuters were initially unsure if they would still be charged. Some received messages from their Fastag accounts, but instead of alerts about deductions, they saw notifications about their remaining balance.
A regular commuter from Kharghar to Mumbai shared his experience. He mentioned that when he crossed the Vashi toll at 7 am, the Fastag machine was off, so he just drove through. However, on his return around 5 pm, the machine was operational, and the barriers were raised. The machine scanned his Fastag, and he received the usual SMS. He thought the money had been deducted but later found out that the message was only about his remaining balance, not a deduction.
The supervisor at the Vashi toll naka confirmed that all necessary measures were in place to ensure that no charges were applied to light vehicles. He advised anyone who experiences a deduction to contact customer care.
Jayant Mhaiskar, the chairman and managing director of MEP Infrastructure Developers Ltd, clarified that the acquiring bank had been instructed to stop charging light motor vehicles.
“After we got the government’s notification on Monday evening, we notified the bank to exempt light vehicles from toll charges. While Fastag will still be necessary for heavy vehicles, light vehicles will have their balance displayed without any deductions. If any deductions do happen, we will look into it and make sure to resolve the issue,” Mhaiskar assured.
