Pune: The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) is currently making plans to secure 23 hectares of land in Punawale for a waste depot. In return, the forest department is in the final stages of purchasing 23 hectares of private land adjacent to the Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve in Chandrapur district.

Shekhar Singh, PCMC Municipal Commissioner has confirmed that the PCMC aims to complete the acquisition of the waste depot location by December. Currently, Pimpri-Chinchwad City generates 1200 tonnes of wet and dry waste daily. This waste is currently collected and deposited in the 81-acre waste depot in Moshi. At this depot, a project is in place to convert wet waste into fertilizer. Also, a power generation project using dry waste has recently been initiated.

Additionally, fuel is produced from plastic waste. The Moshi depot has been operational since 1991 and is nearing its capacity limits. Recognizing the need to accommodate the increasing urbanization, the Municipal Corporation initially aimed to acquire 23 hectares of land from the Forest Department in Punawale back in 2008. However, the process of taking over the designated land has faced delays.

The Forest Department then suggested private land adjacent to the Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve in Chandrapur district. The Municipal Corporation has commenced the process of acquiring 23 hectares of land through the Chandrapur Collectorate. In exchange for the Punawale land, the municipality had planned to offer an alternative site in Mulshi to the Forest Department. However, the forest department rejected this option due to the presence of gravelly soil in that location.

The PCMC has already made a payment of INR 5,34,000 for seat counting in this acquisition, with a total payment of INR 10 crore for the land involved. Upon completion of the land purchase process, it will enable the establishment of a waste depot equipped with a contemporary waste processing system. Commissioner Singh expresses confidence in this endeavour’s ability to prevent the accumulation of garbage heaps in the vicinity.
