In a significant move to address climate change, pollution management, and disaster preparedness, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). This partnership aims to facilitate the exchange of information related to weather forecasts, natural disaster alerts, and mitigation strategies, ensuring better preparedness for emerging challenges.

As part of the initiative, an advanced X-Band Doppler Weather Radar tower will be installed at Durgadevi Tekdi in Nigdi. The designated site was inspected by PCMC Commissioner Shekhar Singh and IMD’s Chief Scientist in Pune, K.S. Hosalikar. Other officials, including PCMC Additional Commissioner Chandrakant Indalkar, City Engineer Manoj Sethia, Chief Disaster Management Officer Omprakash Bahival, and IMD scientists Uday Shende, Dr. Shijo Zacharia, and Ashwin Raju, were also present.

The radar, developed indigenously, has a coverage area of approximately 100 kilometers, encompassing Pimpri Chinchwad city, Pune district, nearby hilly regions, and surrounding areas. It will provide real-time observations of extreme weather events such as heavy rainfall, storms, and hail, enabling the city to implement proactive disaster management measures.

Commissioner Shekhar Singh highlighted the importance of the collaboration, stating that the MoU will help PCMC integrate climate data into its planning processes for sustainable urban development. Under the agreement, IMD will supply regular weather forecasts and advisories to PCMC, aiding in city-level disaster mitigation and management.
