Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has unveiled a groundbreaking project titled ‘Mission 15,’ designed to revolutionize a significant portion of the city’s road network. This initiative will enhance 50 kilometers of key corridors across Pune, focusing on nine major roads to improve travel efficiency and safety.

The project, spearheaded by transport planner aims to upgrade existing roads rather than redevelop them. He noted, “While past projects like the Bremen Chowk to Parihar Chowk redevelopment were comprehensive, ‘Mission 15’ will enhance roads according to Urban Street Design Guidelines (USDG), implementing essential updates.”

The project will focus on the following road stretches:

– Nagar Road (8.7 km)

– Solapur Road (6 km)

– Magarpatta Road (6.8 km)

– North Main Road (5.5 km)

– Sinhagad Road (7 km)

– Ganeshkhind Road (3.2 km)

– Sangamwadi Road (2 km)

– Baner Road (7.5 km)

– Karve Road (3.3 km)

Detailed Approach and Implementation

Utilizing differential global positioning system (DGPS) technology, the project will map roads thoroughly, covering all critical features such as junctions, bus bays, and Metro stations. A thorough traffic survey will assess current conditions, including traffic volume, road capacity, pedestrian and cyclist activity, and parking. “The collected data will reveal key traffic patterns and areas for improvement,” He added. Each improvement plan will address current and future travel demands, with design proposals potentially involving land acquisition to maintain consistent road widths and service continuity.

Innovative Enhancements

The plan includes innovative solutions for storm water management and groundwater recharge. Infrastructure enhancements will cater to pedestrians, cyclists, and persons with disabilities (PwD), featuring sidewalks, crosswalks, bike lanes, shared-use paths, and public plazas. The initiative also aims to address parking shortages and reduce traffic congestion.

Through ‘Mission 15,’ the PMC seeks to transform Pune’s roadways into safer, more efficient, and visually appealing urban corridors, contributing significantly to the city’s overall mobility and quality of life.
