PMC Undertakes Repair And Maintenance Of Seven Old Bridges In Pune
Pune: PMC Seeks Support From Govt Establishments On Waste ManagementÂ
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated repair and maintenance work on seven old bridges in the city, using hydraulic jacks to lift the bridges and replace their bearings. This effort comes after a structural audit of 40 city bridges, conducted by the PMC, revealed the need for bearing replacement in several bridges.
The audit, made compulsory by the state government following the collapse of the Savitri River bridge in Konkan in 2018, identified that most bridges in Pune were in good condition, but some required bearing replacement. Notably, some bridges had not undergone bearing replacement in 35 years, despite the recommended replacement period of 15 to 20 years.
The PMC’s project department conducted the audit in two phases, first assessing flyovers, including the Hadapsar and Sadhu Vaswani flyovers. The audit revealed the need for repair and maintenance work on these structures. However, when the PMC sought the original plans of these bridges from the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), they were found to be unavailable.
To address this issue, the PMC hired an independent consulting company to prepare new plans, which have now been completed. The repair and maintenance work on the bridges is underway, with a focus on filling cracks and replacing bearings.
Yuvraj Deshmukh, chief superintendent engineer, project department while communicating with media stated that, “The municipal corporation appointed consulting firms to conduct a structural audit of 40 bridges. Based on the audit findings, maintenance and repair work is underway. Repairs of seven bridges in Pune are in the final stage. Hydraulic jacks are being used to lift the bridges for replacement of bearings.”
The PMC’s efforts to ensure the safety and longevity of the city’s bridges are ongoing, with a focus on proactive maintenance and repair work.
