Proposal To Name Savitribai Phule Pune University Chowk Flyover After Ajit Pawar
Pune, February 2, 2026: A proposal has been submitted to name the newly built double-decker flyover at Pune University Chowk after late Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, in recognition of his role in advancing infrastructure development in the region.
The demand was made through a letter addressed to the commissioners of the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) and the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) by Dattatray Bahirat. In the letter, Bahirat suggested that the flyover be officially named the “Late Hon. Ajitdada Anantrao Pawar Flyover.”
The letter describes Ajit Pawar’s passing as a significant loss to Maharashtra’s public life, stating that his contributions extended well beyond party lines or family ties. It highlights his involvement in several major development initiatives across Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad and other parts of the state, and notes his reputation for swift decision-making and close monitoring of project execution.
Referring to Pawar’s tenure as deputy chief minister and finance minister, the proposal points out that several policy decisions taken by him had a lasting impact on the state’s growth. One such initiative, it states, was aimed at reducing traffic congestion on Ganeshkhind Road, which eventually led to the construction of the double-decker flyover at Pune University Chowk.
The flyover project is in its final stages and is expected to be opened to traffic in the near future. According to the letter, naming the structure after Ajit Pawar would serve as a lasting tribute to his contribution to Pune’s infrastructure and his broader role in Maharashtra’s development.
So far, the civic and planning authorities have not issued an official response to the proposal.
