Pune, 9th December: Air passengers arriving in Pune will soon get a smoother and wider road from Nagpur Chawl to the airport entrance. The stretch, currently 12 meters wide, will be expanded to 24 meters and developed to international standards. The project, taken up through CSR funding, will also include beautification work. Union Minister of State and Pune MP Murlidhar Mohol shared that the work will begin shortly.

The Pune International Airport at Lohegaon handles around 200 to 225 flights daily, and its annual passenger count has crossed one crore. Traffic on the approach road has increased steadily, leading to year-round congestion. Widening the road had become necessary. Mohol earlier held a meeting with Municipal Commissioner Nawal Kishore Ram, Road Department head Aniruddha Pawaskar, City Engineer Prashant Waghmare, Airport Director Santosh Dhoke, and Air Force Group Captain Kuldeep Singh to finalise the widening and beautification plan.

The land from Nagpur Chawl to the airport belongs partly to the Air Force and partly to private owners. The project had been stuck for years due to land approval issues. With Mohol resolving these objections, both the Air Force and private landholders have now given their consent, clearing the way for the three-kilometre widening project.

“Passengers form their first and last impression of Pune while travelling on this road. We want them to feel a sense of welcome when they arrive and carry with them a lasting memory of the city’s heritage, culture and conveniences when they leave. This road will reflect Pune’s identity. Work will begin soon and the route will become a new landmark for the city.” — Murlidhar Mohol, Union Minister of State
