The delay has led to heightened grievances among passengers, who continue to endure the cramped conditions of the existing terminal, likened to a “bus-stand-like airport.”

Initially promised to be operational within “four-five weeks” after regulatory approvals from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), the new terminal has missed two deadlines, much to the disappointment of passengers and elected representatives, including Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. Despite recent assurances from airport authorities regarding BCAS approvals, the delay persists due to the unmet demand for additional CISF personnel crucial for security operations at the expanded terminal.

Despite the grand inauguration of Pune airport’s new terminal building by Prime Minister Narendra Modi three months ago, flyers are still grounded in frustration as they await its operationalisation. Santosh Dhoke, director of Pune airport, revealed that the delay in operationalising the new terminal hinges on the arrival of 231 additional CISF personnel, essential for managing the larger facility. While all other regulatory clearances, including security and food and beverage stall approvals, have been secured, the lack of CISF reinforcement remains a bottleneck.

Dhoke emphasised that the new terminal, boasting an annual capacity for 9 million passengers and modern facilities, would bring considerable relief to flyers currently grappling with overcrowded conditions at the existing terminal. Despite acknowledging passengers’ justified frustration, Dhoke ruled out the temporary solution of reducing flights, citing potential cost implications for passengers.

Expressing hope for swift resolution post-general elections, Dhoke assured that operationalisation efforts would commence immediately upon receipt of additional CISF personnel. He reiterated the airport’s commitment to providing a seamless travel experience once the new terminal becomes fully operational.
