Pune Based Advocate Highlights Key Lessons For Safeguarding Financial Data Amid Increasing Cyber Crimes
In today’s digital world, protecting financial data like credit card information and bank details is more important than ever. Yet, it is often our own actions that unintentionally expose us to risks. A recent case handled by advocate Srisidhi S. Sabne highlights how quickly such situations can escalate—and how fast action can prevent significant financial loss.
A client of Sabne recently received a phone call from an individual posing as an employee of IndusInd Bank. The caller claimed that her credit card was being used for international transactions and offered assistance in blocking the card. The client, who had just started a new job in Bengaluru and was excited to have received her first credit card, panicked at the news and requested help to block the card immediately.
The caller, pretending to be a bank representative, instructed her to share her phone screen through WhatsApp. He guided her through a fake process of blocking the card by sending an email to what appeared to be IndusInd Bank’s official domain. In reality, the email was sent to a domain cleverly designed to look authentic. During the call, she unknowingly provided the scammer with her credit card details, including the card number and CVV.
Believing her card was blocked, she was then told that her second card, issued by ICICI Bank, was also compromised. Following the same instructions, she handed over sensitive details for this card as well. After receiving confirmation that both cards were supposedly blocked, the call ended.
However, her relief was short-lived. Moments later, she received OTPs (one-time passwords) for transactions made on her credit card. Realizing she had been scammed, she discovered the fraudster had used the card details and OTPs from her shared screen to make purchases, including high-value gadgets like an iPhone from Unicorn and items from Sangeetha Mobiles, Bengaluru.
Reacting quickly, she contacted Sabne, who immediately assisted her in drafting a complaint to the Bengaluru Cyber Police and issuing legal notices to IndusInd Bank, Unicorn, and Sangeetha Mobiles. The next morning, Unicorn responded swiftly, confirming they had blocked the fraudulent transaction and promised to refund the money within a few working days. Similarly, Sangeetha Mobiles took prompt action to block the purchase and initiate a refund. Within three days, both vendors refunded the full amounts to the client’s account.
The speed and efficiency demonstrated by Unicorn Info Solutions Pvt. Ltd., Sangeetha Mobiles, and their payment gateways (PineLabs and PayTM) were commendable. Their proactive measures helped reverse what could have been a devastating financial loss.
This incident serves as a vital reminder of the growing prevalence of cybercrime and how quickly fraudsters can exploit vulnerabilities. Key takeaways include the importance of acting immediately when such frauds occur and understanding that educated and employed individuals are often prime targets. Cybercriminals prey on human emotions like fear and panic, using sophisticated methods to gain access to sensitive data.
In conclusion, safeguarding personal financial information is everyone’s responsibility. Vigilance is essential to prevent criminals from exploiting our weaknesses, and prompt legal and technical action can help mitigate the damage if such breaches occur. The efforts of Unicorn, Sangeetha Mobiles, PineLabs, and PayTM stand out as excellent examples of how timely intervention can turn a potential disaster into a recoverable situation.
As Sabne emphasizes, “All’s well that ends well.” This case is a reminder to remain cautious, act quickly, and report any suspicious activity to the proper authorities.
