Pune: Apang Leprosy Punarvasan Va Yuvak Sangathan, Antule Nagar, a non-governmental organization (NGO) committed to helping people suffering from Leprosy, is calling for action on a pressing problem of giving water rights & other problems that affect a marginalized group in society which are Leprosy-affected people in Antule Nagar area of Kondhwa.

As per information from Satish Sawant, President, Apang Leprosy Punarvasan Va Yuvak Sangathan, Antule Nagar, Leprosy is not only a painful condition that attacks nerve endings, but it also leaves the patient vulnerable to infections and ulcers. If left untreated, Leprosy can cause the loss of finger, hand, toe, and foot. It can also lead to blindness, facial deformities, and hand and foot deformities.

The battle against leprosy extends far beyond medical treatment; it necessitates a comprehensive approach that confronts social issues head-on. Foremost among these challenges is the pervasive social stigma faced by those affected by leprosy. They endure isolation, discrimination, and the denial of fundamental human rights.

At the heart of this issue lies a pressing water crisis. These individuals, already burdened by poverty, neglect, and the loss of essential bodily functions, face the additional hardship of inadequate water supply. The Pune Municipal Corporation’s failure to provide sufficient water and maintain adequate pressure in their taps further compounds their suffering.

It is imperative to note that over 350 individuals have been residing here since 1970. Since then, they have endured unimaginable struggles merely to survive.

The Apang Leprosy Punarvasan Va Yuvak Sangathan Antulenagar implores society to reflect on the treatment of these courageous individuals.

The NGO earnestly has requested all members of the press to stand with them in shedding light on this critical issue. Together, the NGO seeks to spark a movement that not only fights against leprosy but also champions the rights, dignity, and overall well-being of those profoundly affected. Let’s give a leprosy patient a human face.
