Pune: Bhatghar Dam 97% Full, 8,981 Cusecs Released Into Nira River; Citizens Urged To Stay Alert

Pune: All 7 Dams Hit 100% Storage, Water Release Begins
Pune | July 28, 2025 — The water level in the Bhatghar Dam has now reached 97.35% capacity, prompting authorities to release a significant volume of water into the Nira River on Monday morning. As rainfall intensifies across the dam’s catchment area, officials have increased the water discharge to 8,981 cusecs, raising concerns for downstream residents.
According to the Nira Irrigation Subdivision, the dam’s water levels are rising rapidly due to continuous rainfall in the region. As of 10:00 AM today, the dam has begun releasing 7,350 cusecs through its automatic spillway gates and an additional 1,631 cusecs through the hydroelectric power station — totaling 8,981 cusecs being discharged into the Nira riverbed.
Authorities have issued a public advisory, warning citizens — especially those residing in low-lying and riverside areas — to remain cautious and avoid venturing near the riverbanks. The volume of discharge may increase or decrease depending on the ongoing rainfall in the dam’s catchment area.
The Irrigation Department has appealed to the public to cooperate with safety protocols and assist local administration by staying informed and vigilant.
