Pune Boys Adhitya Mangudy Venkata Ganesh and Siddharth Choppara Shine in India’s Best-Ever Performance at International Maths Olympiad

Pune: In a historic victory, the Indian team achieved its best performance at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO 2024), held in Bath, United Kingdom, from July 11 to 22. India secured an unprecedented fourth place globally, marking a milestone in the nation’s participation in this prestigious competition.

The Indian contingent, comprising six talented students, brought immense pride to the country by winning four gold medals, one silver, and one honourable mention. Pune’s prodigies, Adhitya Mangudy Venkata Ganesh and Siddharth Choppara, played pivotal roles in this triumph. Adhitya clinched the top gold medal, while Siddharth earned an honourable mention. Other team members included Ananda Bhaduri (gold), Kanav Talwar (gold), Rushil Mathur (gold), and Arjun Gupta (silver).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi applauded the team’s remarkable achievement, congratulating them on Mann Ki Baat on 28th July. The team members who bagged gold medals include Adhitya Mangudy (Grade 11 from Pune), Ananda Bhaduri (Grade 12 from Guwahati), Kanav Talwar (Grade 10 from Noida), and Rushil Mathur (Grade 12 from Mumbai). Arjun Gupta (Grade 12 from Delhi) won the silver medal, and Siddharth Choppara (Grade 12 from Pune) received an honourable mention.

Adhitya expressed immense pride in representing India and contributing to the country’s success. “The Prime Minister’s acknowledgment has encouraged and motivated me, further fueling my passion for mathematics and my desire to bring more accolades to India,” he said.

Adhitya emerged as the top performer among the Indian contingent, scoring an impressive 99.34% and amassing a total of 35 points. This was not his first time representing India; he had previously participated in the 2022 and 2023 editions, securing bronze medals on both occasions.

The Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) in Mumbai, which facilitated the Indian team’s participation in IMO, highlighted the significance of this achievement. “This is the best performance by an Indian team since 1989, the year of our debut, both in terms of the number of gold medals won and rank achieved.”

Adhitya, a student at Sri Chaitanya Techno School in Bavdhan, credits his mentor, M Prakash, for his introduction to Olympiads and the nurturing of his talent. He started participating in Olympiads from Std 8 under M Prakash’s guidance and aims to guide aspiring students in the Mathematics Olympiad while further exploring mathematics and computer science.
