Pune Braces For Intense Rain As IMD Issues Alert; Ghat Regions, Satara On High Risk
Pune, June 19, 2025:
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Pune and surrounding ghat regions, warning of very heavy rainfall and gusty winds throughout the day. The weather department has also flagged potential risks of landslides, waterlogging, and thunderstorms, urging citizens to remain cautious, especially during early morning and late evening hours.
The intense rainfall is attributed to a well-marked low-pressure system over the east-central Arabian Sea and the North Konkan coast. This system is drawing in moisture-rich winds, triggering widespread downpours across western Maharashtra.
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Mumbai has placed Pune’s ghat areas, along with Palghar, Thane, Raigad, and Ratnagiri, under an orange alert. Meanwhile, districts in North Maharashtra and Vidarbha, including Nagpur, Chandrapur, Bhandara, and Gadchiroli, remain under a yellow alert, with scattered rains expected to continue over the next few days.
The rainfall is forecast to intensify further in Pune and Satara, with certain locations potentially receiving over 70 mm of rain within a few hours. The IMD has warned of gusty winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph, particularly over hilly and coastal zones.
With the downpour likely to persist through the weekend, school closures and transport disruptions are possible. Citizens are advised to avoid non-essential travel, especially through ghat roads, and prepare for potential delays due to flooding or slippery conditions.
From Friday onwards, rainfall is expected to taper off slightly, although isolated heavy showers may still occur in some areas.
