In view of the early sunset due to winter in Pune, a member of Mohalla Committee, Kasba-Vishrambaugwada Ward, Pune, has requested the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), through a letter written on January 10 (Wednesday), to switch on street lights early during evenings in Pune.

As per information from the request letter of Advocate Rafique Shaikh, Member of Mohalla Committee, Kasba-Vishrambaugwada Ward, Pune, the street lights of all the streets of Pune city are turned on at 7:00 pm every day and approximately 6:00 am, they are turned off. However, now, due to winter, the sun is rising late in the morning and on several days, the atmosphere is getting dark even after sunrise. The sunset is happening early every day, at approximately 6:15 pm.

However, the PMC switches on the street lights at 7:00 pm which increases the probability of accidents & unsafe environments for children, women, senior citizens, and students. Hence, the PMC is requested through the letter to keep all street lights switched on under Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) for 10-15 minutes after sunrise according to the seasons and the street lights should be turned on 5 minutes before sunset as per different seasons.

An official of the PMC electrical department, requesting anonymity said, “We will think about it.”
