Pune, November 10, 2025: The issue of public consumption of alcohol is seeing a worrying resurgence in the Wakad area, prompting a coordinated response from police and community leaders. While authorities confirm ongoing action, they are making a direct appeal to residents for assistance.

The problem was recently highlighted when an activist citizen filed a formal complaint, which was met with prompt attention from the Pimpri Chinchwad Police. This incident, however, has sparked a crucial question among the general public: Can a normal citizen effectively register such complaints and expect action?

The answer from authorities is a unified and resounding yes.

Police Confirm Action and Seek Public Partnership

Senior police officials have detailed their approach to curbing this nuisance. PI Madhukar Thorat emphasized the force’s proactive stance but acknowledged the need for public vigilance: “Our patrolling is happening. Wherever we see such incidents we take action. But in case if something is missed out by us, we urge the public to raise a complaint on the 112 control room. Informing us about such incidents will help us control them effectively.”

Echoing this sentiment, PI Shatrughna Mali of Wakad Police Station stated, “We have asked our beat marshals to take firm action against such violators. Also, we urge people to call on 112 in case they find any such incidence.”

Sachin Londhe, Founder of the Pimpri Chinchwad Co-operative Housing Society Federation, provided a citizen’s perspective, noting the widespread nature of the problem. “These things are happening in many areas and it has become common now,” he said. Londhe also pointed to a specific practice that facilitates public drinking: “I requested the commissioner to restrict wine shop owners from selling glasses and other stuff with alcohol. This makes the drinkers sit nearby and drink in their vehicles and all.”

He strongly advocated for the use of the emergency number, urging, “If citizens see any such incidents, calling 112 will ensure immediate action is taken on the matter.”

Addressing the legal provisions, PI Sanjay Kolhe from Excise Duty wing at Wakad clarified the rules surrounding the sale of alcohol. “Selling plastic disposables and liquor in plastic pouches is not allowed at all,” he stated. “But wherever such a thing is happening, we will definitely take action. We have already taken action at many places where such cases were found.”

A Simple Solution For Citizens

The collective message from police and community leaders is clear: citizen partnership is key. Instead of confronting individuals, residents are advised to immediately call the national emergency helpline number  “112”. This ensures the complaint is logged and directed to the nearest patrol vehicle for swift intervention.
