Pune Climbs To 10th Rank In Clean Air Survey 2025, Records Major Improvement In Air Quality
Pune, September 9, 2025: Pune has secured the 10th rank in the Clean Air Survey 2025 conducted by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India, covering 130 cities across the country. This achievement marks a significant improvement for the city, which ranked 23rd in last year’s survey, moving up 13 places due to the consistent efforts of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).
The survey, conducted for the period between April 2024 and April 2025, was based on multiple parameters such as emissions from biomass and waste burning, road dust, construction-related pollution, vehicular and industrial emissions, other sources of pollution, and awareness initiatives undertaken for pollution control.
PMC has been actively encouraging citizens to adopt CNG and electric vehicles. All newly purchased and leased vehicles by the corporation have also been converted to electric. As of July 2025, Pune had 41,16,310 registered vehicles, with the number of electric vehicles rising sharply from 33,000 to over 95,000. The city also reports that 70% of its roads fall under the green belt category, and solid waste disposal is being managed systematically.
To further strengthen its air quality initiatives, PMC is set to receive ₹391 crore from the central government under the 15th Finance Commission, out of which ₹162 crore has already been disbursed. The funds have been utilized throughout the year for various anti-pollution measures, including the introduction of CNG garbage trucks, buses, PMPML’s electric buses, and improved systems in crematoriums. Gas and electric furnaces have been installed, and in traditional wood-based crematoriums, APC systems have been fitted to reduce emissions.
In addition to infrastructure improvements, PMC has also focused on public awareness campaigns to encourage citizens to support efforts toward cleaner air, stated Santosh Warule, Deputy Commissioner, Environment Department, Pune Municipal Corporation.
