New Delhi, September 9, 2025: Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan has been elected as the 15th Vice President of India, defeating opposition candidate and former Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy. Backed by the NDA, Radhakrishnan secured 452 votes, while the INDIA bloc nominee received 300.

The 67-year-old leader, from Tamil Nadu’s Goundar-Kongu Vellalar community, is the third Tamilian to hold the nation’s second-highest constitutional office. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier appealed for his unanimous election.

The Vice Presidential election saw high opposition turnout, with 315 MPs casting votes. The electoral college, comprising 781 members of Parliament, recorded polling between 10 am and 5 pm.

Returning Officer PC Mody formally declared Radhakrishnan’s victory and announced that the result would be sent to the Election Commission. The contest underscored the unity shown by opposition parties despite their defeat.

A two-term Lok Sabha MP from Coimbatore, Radhakrishnan began his career with the RSS and rose through BJP ranks. Although considered for a Union ministerial post during Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s government in 1998, he narrowly missed the opportunity. His election marks a significant political milestone in his decades-long career.
