Pune: Deccan Gymkhana Parisar Samiti Organises Voter Awareness Event at Kamla Nehru Park
Pune, January 12, 2026: On Sunday evening, January 11, 2026, the Deccan Gymkhana Parisar Samiti (DGPS), a citizens’ collective from the Deccan area, organised a distinctive voter awareness programme at Kamla Nehru Park, highlighting the importance of citizen participation in the democratic process.
Instead of conventional speeches, the event conveyed its message through music and traditional Puneri patya, using culture and creativity to engage residents and emphasise that every vote matters and every voice counts.
Speaking at the event, DGPS member Baha Tepan outlined the group’s core demands, which include safe and secure neighbourhoods, assured water supply without dependence on tankers, clean air, protection and expansion of green spaces, and safeguarding the city’s tekdis with a firm opposition to road projects through hill areas. The group also called for pothole-free roads, pedestrian-friendly footpaths, and protection of residential localities like Deccan from unplanned commercialisation without supporting infrastructure.

DGPS representative Nitin Joshi stressed the need for balanced and sustainable development. “Development must be planned and citizen-centric, with safety as its foundation. We want a government that delivers results, remains accountable, and governs responsibly, rather than one driven by empty promises or short-term freebies,” he said.
The central message of the programme was clear: “Voting is our voice. If we want better governance, we must step out and vote.”

More than 50 residents from the area attended the event, holding placards displaying their demands in the traditional Puneri style, reinforcing the call for informed and active civic participation.
