In a move to improve readiness for disasters, Pune District Collector Dr. Suhas Diwase has instructed the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), the irrigation department, and the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) to clear encroachments from riverbeds and flood lines. This decision follows repeated floods in Pune due to uncontrolled construction and encroachments along waterways.

During a recent meeting on disaster readiness, Dr. Diwase stressed the need for proactive steps to reduce flood risks. Experts advised the PMC to monitor and prevent encroachments and suggested setting up a drainage system for rainwater.

Removing encroachments from flood-prone areas is crucial across the Pune Metropolitan Region (PMC, PCMC, PMRDA). Simple communication channels for weather updates and disaster information are also important.

The impact of projects like the Pune Metro on the environment was discussed, urging quick action to clear construction debris and encroachments. Prompt removal of garbage and waste from slums was also highlighted.

Dr. Diwase emphasized training programs for disaster management, with help from the National Disaster Response Force. The health department was told to list hospital beds and medical resources for emergencies.

Officials including Zilla Parishad CEO Santosh Patil and IMD Pune chief Krushnanand Hosalikar attended the meeting. Civic reforms to address encroachment issues were stressed, along with the need to follow flood line regulations set by the irrigation department.
