Pune Doctors Achieve Remarkable Feat: Six Organ Transplants in 36 Hours Save Multiple Lives
Doctors at a private hospital in Pune successfully performed six organ transplants in just 36 hours, giving a new lease of life to several critically ill patients. The transplants included one liver, two lungs, and three kidneys.
The first transplant took place on February 13 at 10:30 AM, when a mother donated her kidney to her 29-year-old son suffering from chronic kidney failure. He had been on regular dialysis due to tubular disease.
The second transplant occurred on February 14 and involved a 52-year-old woman who met with an accident near Khed while riding pillion on a two-wheeler. She was declared brain dead upon arrival at the hospital. Her family consented to donate her lungs, kidneys, liver, and corneas.
Her liver was transplanted into a 53-year-old man suffering from chronic liver disease, portal hypertension, and Type 2 diabetes. One of her kidneys was given to a 41-year-old woman with Crescentic Glomerulonephritis, while the other was sent to a hospital in Kolhapur. Her lungs were transplanted into a 39-year-old woman with progressive fibrosing interstitial lung disease.
On the same day, DPU Super Specialty Hospital performed a third transplant, receiving another set of lungs and a kidney from a different donor. The kidney was transplanted into a 53-year-old man with hypertension and nephrosclerosis, while the lungs were given to a 35-year-old police officer suffering from idiopathic pulmonary hypertension.
A doctor praised the coordinated efforts of the medical team. She highlighted that the liver transplant patient, initially in a semi-comatose state, is now alert and recovering well.
