The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall warning for 13 states due to a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal. The weather system is expected to bring thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy rainfall, particularly in Northeast India.
The cyclonic circulation is currently positioned over northeast Assam in the lower troposphere. This will lead to scattered to widespread light to moderate rainfall and snowfall in Arunachal Pradesh from February 17 to 23, with heavy rainfall on February 19. Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura will see isolated to scattered light rainfall during the same period. Thunderstorms and lightning will intensify between February 18-20, with gusty winds (30-40 km/h) on February 19.
Apart from the cyclonic circulation, a western disturbance is affecting northern and western India. Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad will receive light rain and snowfall on February 17-18, with thunderstorms and lightning on February 19-20. As the system moves east, Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, and Jharkhand will get light rainfall and thunderstorms on February 19-20.
Western and central India will also experience rainfall. West Rajasthan will see isolated light rain on February 19, while Punjab and Haryana will get light showers on February 19-20. East Rajasthan and West Uttar Pradesh will have similar conditions on February 19-20, and Chhattisgarh will see light rain on February 21-22.
Authorities have advised residents to stay alert, as these weather systems could impact daily life in affected regions.
