A three-year-old girl from Pune was saved by a hospital in Pimpri, as they successfully removed a plastic foreign object from her lung.

The girl had accidentally inhaled a plastic dangler from a bangle, and after eight days, she was brought to DPU Private Super Specialty Hospital in Pimpri on September 9 due to fever and cough.

Upon conducting a comprehensive examination, it was discovered that the air passage in the right lower lobe of the lung had diminished and collapsed, resulting in an infection and pneumonia.

Based on the clinical observations, healthcare professionals suspected that the child had aspirated a foreign object and thus, referred the child for bronchoscopy.

As per the information provided, a group of doctors successfully carried out a procedure lasting for 8 hours. The purpose of the intubation was to alleviate distress and ensure proper access to the airways. Subsequently, a rigid bronchoscopy was performed. This particular case posed a challenge, as the foreign object went in the terminal bronchus. However, the medical team skillfully grasped and manipulated the object in the correct direction, avoiding any harm to the windpipe.

As per the information received, the expansion of the right lower lobe commenced after the successful removal of the foreign object. Unfortunately, the parents of the patient were unaware of the incident when she accidentally inhaled the object, resulting in a delay in treatment. This delay subsequently led to an increased risk of infection and fever. Following a thorough observation period of 3 days, the patient was finally discharged on September 13 and prescribed oral medications.
