Pune, December 18, 2025: Bringing back a nostalgic chapter of the city’s public transport, the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) has floated a tender for 25 double-decker buses that are expected to hit the roads during April–May this summer. The buses will be fully electric, air-conditioned and operated on a rental basis.

According to PMPML officials, trial runs of the double-decker electric buses were conducted across various parts of Pune a few days ago. Following the successful trials, the transport undertaking moved ahead with the tender process. If timelines are met, Punekars will soon be able to experience double-decker bus travel once again after nearly three decades.

The iconic double-decker buses, which last operated in Pune in 1995, are set to return in a modern avatar. The buses are manufactured by Switch Mobility at its Chennai facility and will be inducted into PMPML’s fleet in the first phase.

Features of the New Double-Decker Buses

The upcoming buses will be fully electric and air-conditioned, offering a smoother and more comfortable ride with improved suspension systems. They will be equipped with digital ticketing facilities and are designed on the lines of double-decker buses currently operating in cities like London.

Operational Advantages

Transport officials say the new buses will help optimise routes without increasing the number of vehicles or trips. Their height has been planned in such a way that metro station infrastructure will not pose any obstruction. Unlike the earlier SLF-model double-decker buses, which incurred high maintenance costs, the electric versions are expected to significantly reduce operational and upkeep expenses.

Passenger Capacity And Specifications

Each bus will be capable of carrying over 100 passengers, with seating for around 70 commuters and standing space for about 40. The buses will have a height of approximately 14 feet 4 inches, and each vehicle is estimated to cost around ₹2 crore.

PMPML At A Glance

PMPML currently operates a fleet of around 1,650 buses across 381 routes. On average, nearly 12 lakh passengers use PMPML services daily, generating approximately ₹1.5 crore in passenger revenue. The buses collectively cover close to 3.6 lakh kilometres every day.

With the introduction of electric double-decker buses, PMPML aims to enhance passenger capacity, improve travel comfort and promote environmentally friendly public transport in the city.
