Deputy Chief Minister and Guardian Minister Ajit Pawar has intervened to halt the collection of property tax arrears in recently merged villages following widespread discontent among residents.

Pawar’s directive to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) Commissioner came on Sunday during a meeting where various issues plaguing the merged villages were discussed.

The residents of these villages have been vocal about facing triple property tax charges and forceful collection methods. In response to their grievances, Pawar ordered the municipal administration to suspend the collection of property tax dues until further strategic decisions are made in consultation with Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

During the meeting held at the government rest house, residents and representatives from 34 villages met with Pawar to express their concerns. Apart from the exorbitant property tax rates, residents also raised issues regarding encroachment actions and water supply shortages.

Expressing solidarity with the aggrieved citizens, Pawar assured them of addressing their complaints regarding forced property tax collections and property confiscations. He emphasized the need for a strategic decision-making process involving the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister.

The meeting was attended by notable figures including State Women’s Commission Chairperson Rupali Chakankar, MLAs Bhimrao Tapkir, Sunil Tingre, Chetan Tupe, and Pune Municipal Commissioner Vikram Kumar.

Furthermore, residents of Undri highlighted the issue of water scarcity. In response, Pawar suggested that the PMC Commissioner ensure an adequate supply of water to Undri through water tankers, underscoring the importance of addressing basic necessities for all citizens.

The Undri residents Jayashri Punekar, Swati Takle, Sachin Gawade, Sachin Punekar and many others were present for the meeting to raise issues regarding property tax and water supply issues.
