Pune  January 12, 2026: Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday presented an ambitious roadmap for Pune’s future, announcing the vision of developing the city as a $280 billion “Pune Growth Hub”, positioning it as a key driver of Maharashtra’s economy.

Speaking at the “Samvad Punekaranashi” (Dialogue with Punekars) programme ahead of the Pune Municipal Corporation elections, Fadnavis said, “Pune is not just a city; it is the engine of Maharashtra’s economy. Of the state’s $580 billion GDP, Pune currently contributes $78 billion. Our goal is to increase this to $280 billion through the Pune Growth Hub concept.” He added that keeping in mind Pune’s expansion, opportunities, and rapid urbanisation, integrated development of Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and the PMRDA region would be undertaken.

Union Minister of State Murlidhar Mohol, ministers Chandrakant Patil and Madhuri Misal, BJP state general secretary Rajesh Pandey, and city president Dheeraj Ghate were present at the event. Actress Girija Oak moderated the interaction with the Chief Minister.

Commenting on the political scenario, Fadnavis said, “Devabhau does not speak much—his work speaks for itself.” He clarified that in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, the BJP has not formed an alliance with either Shiv Sena or the Nationalist Congress Party. While there was an understanding to avoid criticism of each other, he noted that the opposition was losing patience. Taking a veiled dig at populist promises, he said elections cannot be won merely through announcements of freebies, indirectly criticising promises such as free air travel or free tickets.

On the metro project, the Chief Minister said the metro is a joint initiative of the Centre and the state, and fare decisions rest with the fare fixation committee. “Punekars do not want free services; they want quality metro and bus services and are ready to pay a reasonable fare,” he said. He noted that while Pune Metro initially faced resistance unlike Nagpur Metro, decisive decisions helped accelerate the work. He also pointed out that a stay on metro work in the Aarey Colony led to a delay of three years and an additional cost of nearly ₹10,000 crore.

Highlighting infrastructure challenges, Fadnavis said Pune spans 500 sq km, but only 9 per cent of the area is covered by roads. Traffic on 32 major roads is running at nearly two-and-a-half times their capacity. To address this, the concept of developing “Patallok” (underground infrastructure) is being implemented, which includes 56 km of underground roads and 23 flyovers, with an estimated cost of ₹32,000 crore. A 100 km metro network is being developed, along with a single-ticket system for metro and PMPML buses. The current fleet of 1,000 e-buses will be expanded to 5,000 to ensure end-to-end connectivity. He expressed confidence that the Pune Ring Road would reduce traffic congestion by 40 per cent.

On water supply, the Chief Minister said the real issue is not excess water usage but 40 per cent leakage. Sixty per cent of the equal water supply scheme has been completed, which will replace old pipelines and make distribution more accountable. He added that wastewater reuse and identification of new natural water sources would be prioritised.

Clarifying the government’s stand on Pune’s hills, Fadnavis said hills would not be destroyed; instead, encroachments would be removed with proper rehabilitation. He assured that sustainable development would be carried out while protecting hills and biodiversity.

Issuing a strong warning, he said criminals have no place in civic bodies. “Even if criminals get elected, their place will be in jail, not in the municipal corporation,” he asserted, adding that as Home Minister he is determined to break the backbone of crime in Pune.

Defining good leadership, Fadnavis said a true leader is one who thinks 20 years ahead, inspires people, and carries everyone along while shaping the future.
