In a major step toward enhancing regional air connectivity, Maharashtra’s first dedicated heliport is set to be developed at the Hadapsar Gliding Centre in Pune. Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol announced on Monday that the 230-acre land currently occupied by the Gliding Centre will be transferred to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for the project.

The Hadapsar Gliding Centre, owned by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), has long served as a training ground for aspiring pilots and aviation enthusiasts. As per a directive from the Ministry of Civil Aviation dated March 4, 2022, the site and its assets were leased to AAI for 99 years at a nominal rent of ₹1 annually. The formal handover of the 250-acre site was completed on December 31, 2024.

“This is a key move toward strengthening regional aviation infrastructure,” Mohol stated. “Though the heliport plan is in its early stages, the AAI will soon begin detailed planning and design work.”

Once operational, the heliport will support emergency services, medical transport, tourism, business travel, and charter operations. Mohol emphasized Hadapsar’s strategic advantage in connectivity, predicting significant economic growth for the surrounding region. He also shared that a second heliport is being considered for Pune district, with the site yet to be finalised.

Adding to the vision for Hadapsar, Mohol revealed plans for a world-class aviation gallery to be built alongside the heliport. The gallery will serve as an interactive and educational destination showcasing India’s civil and military aviation history. It is expected to feature aircraft models, flight simulators, historical exhibits, and immersive digital experiences.

“Our goal is to inspire young minds and highlight India’s contributions to global aviation. This won’t be just a museum — it will be a dynamic hub combining infrastructure, education, and tourism,” said Mohol.
