A 32-year-old homemaker from Vadgaonsheri was duped of ₹33.81 lakh by fraudsters impersonating officials from the Mumbai police and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

The woman was contacted on December 7 by a caller claiming to be a TRAI official. The caller alleged that a SIM card in her name had been misused. He further stated that the Mumbai police had filed an FIR against her.

To intimidate her, the caller connected her to an accomplice impersonating a Mumbai police officer. This fake officer informed her she was under “digital arrest” for 14 days due to the FIR.

The fraudsters escalated the scheme by involving another accomplice posing as a Deputy Commissioner of Police (Cyber). During a video call, this individual falsely claimed her Aadhaar, biometric details, and other documents had been used for illegal activities.

The scammers demanded her Aadhaar card, PAN card, and bank account details under the pretext of “verification.” They coerced her into transferring ₹33.81 lakh to their accounts, threatening her with legal action and arrest if she refused.

The victim realized she had been conned when the fraudsters stopped communicating. She then filed a complaint with the city’s cybercrime police. An FIR was registered at the Yerawada police station on Friday.

Police have urged citizens to remain cautious and not share personal or financial details over the phone, especially under threats of legal action.
