Pune: Khadakwasla Dam Releases 2,000 Cusecs Amid Heavy Rainfall; Flood Alert Issued for Low-Lying Areas in Pune
Pune, June 19, 2025:
In response to the rising water levels caused by continuous rainfall, the Water Resources Department of Maharashtra has begun releasing 2,000 cusecs of water from Khadakwasla Dam into the Mutha River, starting at 1:00 PM today. The discharge has triggered flood alerts across several low-lying areas under the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).
Precautionary Measures and Alerts
PMC Additional Commissioner Prithviraj BP stated, “All Municipal Assistant Commissioners have been instructed to inform residents about safety precautions. Teams are actively addressing waterlogging across affected areas.”
According to Shweta Kurhade, Control Officer at the Central Flood Control Room, Khadakwasla Irrigation Division, the water release is a preventive measure due to ongoing inflows into the dam from the catchment areas.
“Due to continuous inflow into Khadakwasla Dam, a controlled release of 2,000 cusecs has started. Citizens, particularly those near the riverbed, should remain vigilant and avoid going near the river,” Kurhade advised.
High-Risk Zones Identified
Residents have been urged to move livestock and belongings away from the riverbed immediately. Areas under close watch for possible flooding include Sinhagad Road, Mhatre Bridge, Deccan, Shivane, and Erandwane, where overflow incidents are commonly observed during dam discharges.
