Massive Traffic Jam on Mumbai-Pune Expressway Amid Heavy Rainfall and Poor Lane Discipline

Pune/Mumbai | June 19, 2025 — A massive traffic jam has brought the Mumbai-Pune Expressway to a standstill on Thursday morning, with all lanes currently blocked due to multiple diversions and ongoing rainfall. Commuters are facing long delays as the expressway, already infamous for frequent congestion, struggled to cope with the heavy inflow of vehicles, particularly trucks.

Officials have confirmed that the Western Ghats, Mumbai, and Pune regions will continue to receive moderate to heavy rainfall throughout the day. The downpour has further slowed down movement and raised concerns over road safety.

Daily travellers and frustrated commuters have raised questions about the poor traffic management on one of India’s busiest expressways. Overloaded trucks occupying all lanes, complete lack of lane discipline, and inaction by the highway traffic police have worsened the situation.

“This expressway is always jammed, and no one does anything about it. Heavy trucks don’t stick to lanes, and the police just watch. It’s dangerous and exhausting,” said a regular commuter stuck near Lonavala.

Travel Advisory:

  • Avoid unnecessary travel on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway today.
  • Be cautious around the ghat sections; landslide risk remains due to persistent rain.
  • Carry emergency supplies and check traffic updates before starting your journey.

Further updates are awaited from highway authorities regarding the clearance of the traffic.
