Pune: Legal Issues Force Cancellation of PMAY Housing Project in Ravet
The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has canceled a 934-flat housing project at Ravet under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) due to delays caused by legal proceedings. The project will now be proposed for inclusion in the scheme’s second phase, a move likely to increase flat costs significantly.
Initiated in 2019 on a two-hectare plot with a budget of ₹88.25 crore, the project aimed to provide affordable housing and was scheduled for completion within two-and-a-half years. Infra Construction was appointed as the contractor. However, construction came to a halt in October 2020 following a Bombay High Court petition challenging the land acquisition process. Although the courts cleared the project in October 2024, the four-year delay and escalating costs rendered the original plan unfeasible.
With PMAY’s December 2024 deadline looming, PCMC decided to cancel the project. The corporation has approached the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) to include the scheme in PMAY’s second phase. A new detailed project report (DPR) will now be required, along with fresh approvals, consultants, and contractors.
The cancellation has left the 934 beneficiaries, selected via a lottery in February 2021, in limbo. Each had paid a ₹5,000 registration fee, but with the revised plan, flat prices are expected to double, posing significant financial challenges.
