Pune, May 28, 2025: In a significant push towards improving last-mile connectivity and easing traffic congestion, the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) has initiated plans to extend metro lines to Lohegaon Airport and Pune’s rapidly growing southern suburbs such as Kondhwa, Undri and Yeolewadi.

The expansion includes a 3-km spur from the existing Ramwadi station to Lohegaon Airport and a 20-km metro corridor stretching from the Civil Court interchange to Yewalewadi, with an additional spur to NIBM. The project also proposes metro connectivity to Kondhwa and Undri. Maha-Metro has invited consultancy firms to prepare both an Alternative Analysis Report (AAR) and a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the planned corridors.

The proposed metro extension aligns with Line 3 of the Pune Metro, currently being constructed by the Tata-Siemens consortium. Once the DPR is complete, Maha-Metro will decide whether to develop the extension independently or assign it to the ongoing Line 3 project team. The initiative aims to promote public transportation usage, shorten travel times, and support sustainable urban development.

The AAR will examine various transit models such as metro rail and Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS), evaluating parameters like cost-efficiency, environmental impact, ridership potential, and compatibility with Pune’s existing transit framework. Based on the analysis, the DPR will detail project specifications, financial requirements, and implementation schedules.

The move follows repeated demands from former Wadgaon Sheri MLAs and recent directives from the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation to enhance airport access. By improving links between the airport and key southern localities, Maha-Metro aims to serve both residents and travelers more efficiently, while helping reduce the city’s carbon footprint.

Residents from areas like Undri, Yewalewadi and Kondhwa have welcomed the initiative, expressing hope that it will ease daily commuting challenges and transform regional mobility.
