With the recent extension of the Pune Metro to Swargate, many of us are excited about the convenience it brings—comfort, cost-efficiency, and time-saving journeys. However, amidst the excitement, we often forget to be cautious with our personal belongings. This lapse in attention is being exploited by thieves, who are taking advantage of distracted passengers. While we are usually careful about our phones and wallets, thieves have shifted focus to jewelry, watches, and other easily concealed items.

Anant Joshi, a commuter said, “I experienced such an unfortunate incident just yesterday. I was traveling from PCMC to Swargate on the 10:45 AM Metro. As soon as I exited the Swargate station, I realized my ring had been stolen. It had become loose on my finger, but I hadn’t noticed when or how it was taken. I approached the PCMC Metro station staff, hoping for their assistance. The customer care representative assured me that the Metro is equipped with CCTV cameras and is “100% theft-proof.” Yet, when I pressed for a way to report the theft, I was referred to the station in charge. She listened to my complaint, shared my details internally, and told me that they would contact me if the ring was found.

Joshi further said, “When I inquired about reviewing CCTV footage, I was informed that each station handles its own footage, and footage from the train itself can only be accessed at the Civil Court station with a police FIR. Despite these assurances, I hold little hope of recovering my ring.”

I urge all passengers to remain vigilant with their belongings, as the support from Metro staff in such cases may be limited. I also learned from a Metro security officer that a woman recently lost a 3.5 tola gold necklace during her Metro ride, informed Joshi.
