PUNE: Puneites achieved a remarkable milestone this Sunday as the Pune Metro witnessed an unprecedented surge in ridership, translating to a significant upswing in the metro’s daily earnings.

Notably, Shivaji Nagar Metro Station, Vanaj Metro Station, and Ruby Hall Metro Station experienced a substantial influx of commuters. Noteworthy is the 30% discount offered for Saturday and Sunday travel, aiming to incentivize metro usage, which consistently drives up the number of metro commuters during weekends.

Furthermore, a special concession of 30% in ticket prices for school and college students has been extended, fostering greater affordability. With metro fares ranging between Rs 10 and Rs 30 and trains operating at intervals of 10 minutes, which extends to 15 minutes during peak hours, the Pune Metro’s two lines have captured the attention of the city’s residents since their inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 1.

The newly introduced routes, spanning from Civil Court to Pimpri Chinchwad and from Garware College Station to Ruby Hall, have undeniably kindled the interest of Pune residents, propelling them to embrace metro travel. This shift towards metro commuting is anticipated to alleviate traffic congestion and reduce pollution levels by curbing the number of private vehicles on the roads.

Hemant Sonawane, speaking with Pune Pulse, expressed, “Commuters are actively choosing the metro for their travels. The PCMC to Civil Court Metro Station route witnessed a ridership of 38,214, whereas the Vanaj to Ruby Hall Metro Station route saw 42,468 commuters, resulting in a revenue collection of 13.7 lakhs on Sunday.”
