On March 6, 2024, the third phase of the metro line was inaugurated, completing the Civil Court–Swargate stretch (3.5 km, 3 stations) and the Ruby Hall–Ramwadi stretch (5.5 km, 4 stations). These additions brought the Pimpri-Swargate line to a total length of 17.4 km with 14 stations, and the Vanaz-Ramwadi line to 15.7 km with 16 stations. Commuters can now travel seamlessly from Pimpri to Swargate in just 40–50 minutes, a major relief for residents dealing with daily traffic congestion.

Pimpri to Nigdi (Bhakti Shakti Chowk) Extension

The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs approved the extension from Swargate to Nigdi (Bhakti Shakti Chowk) on October 23, 2023, with tenders floated on December 16, 2023. Construction began in May 2024 with plans to complete the 4.5 km elevated line in two and a half years.

• Progress Update:

• 28 foundations completed (of 151 total).

• 13 piers completed.

• 201 segments cast (out of 1,337 planned).

• Stations on the Line:

• Chinchwad, Khandoba Mal Chowk (Akurdi), Tilak Chowk (Nigdi), and Bhakti Shakti Chowk.

Hinjewadi–Shivajinagar Line Nears Completion

The 23.203 km Hinjewadi–Shivajinagar metro line, developed by Tata Group under a public-private partnership (PPP), is 70% complete.

• Milestones Achieved:

• Segment installation started in July 2022 at Hinjewadi.

• Ongoing work on pier caps and girders in Wakad and Hinjewadi Phase 1 areas.

• Completion Target: March 2025.

Challenges Ahead

• Land Acquisition: The PCMC is under pressure to expedite the land transfer process for the Pimpri–Nigdi line.

• Approvals: Delays in obtaining necessary permissions may affect project timelines.

What Lies Ahead

The Pimpri to Nigdi extension and the Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar line promise to significantly reduce travel times and ease congestion for residents. However, timely completion hinges on resolving land acquisition issues and adhering to construction schedules.

With the metro lines extending deeper into Pune’s suburban areas, the city moves closer to its goal of a seamless, efficient public transport system. Residents can look forward to reduced travel times, less traffic congestion, and better connectivity across the region.
