Pune Metro To Add 15 New Trains, 45 Coaches As Ridership Surges
Phase 2 approved; new elevated corridors, higher frequency and better connectivity on the cards for Pune’s growing metro network
The Pune Metro is set to undergo a significant expansion with 15 new trains and 45 additional coaches being added to its fleet, following the Union Cabinet’s approval of Phase 2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project. This move comes in response to a steep rise in passenger numbers and increasing demand for reliable urban transit.
Announcing the decision on Saturday, June 28, Pune Metro’s official X (formerly Twitter) account said, “Seeing the growing response to Pune Metro and the increasing number of passengers, 15 new trains and 45 additional coaches will soon be added to the metro fleet.”
Metro Network To Grow Alongside Pune’s Development
The Phase 2 extension will include two new elevated corridors:
- Vanaz to Chandani Chowk
- Ramwadi to Wagholi
Spanning a total of 12.75 km with 13 new stations, this expansion will be developed at an estimated cost of Rs 3,626 crore, and executed by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro). Pre-construction activities such as topographical surveys and design consultancy have already begun.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, reacting to the announcement, noted on X, “Pune is developing in every sector. The expansion of the Metro will boost public transport and make people’s lives easier.”
Rising Ridership and Demand Forecasts
Current figures reflect a rapid growth in metro usage:
- Daily ridership is now over 1.7 lakh passengers
- Projected ridership: From 0.96 lakh in 2027 to 3.49 lakh by 2057
This increase has been especially notable on Line 2 (Vanaz to Ramwadi), which has consistently outpaced Line 1 (PCMC to Swargate) in ridership. Between May and June 27, 2025, Line 2 recorded 25.96 lakh passengers, compared to 21.14 lakh on Line 1. In May alone, Line 2 logged 26.15 lakh riders against Line 1’s 21.46 lakh.
Operational Changes and Benefits
Currently, Pune Metro operates:
- 34 trains with 102 coaches
- Peak-hour frequency: Every 7 minutes (8 am to 11 am)
- Non-peak hours: Every 10 minutes (6–8 am, 11 am–4 pm, 8–10 pm)
- Late-night operations (10–11 pm): Every 15 minutes
With the new addition, Pune Metro will soon boast:
- 49 trains and 147 coaches
This upgrade is expected to ease crowding, shorten commute times, and improve overall connectivity, particularly along congested corridors like Paud Road and Nagar Road. The new routes will better serve IT hubs, commercial zones, colleges, and residential areas, enabling smoother intra-city travel.
As Pune grows into a major economic and tech hub, the metro’s expansion is set to play a key role in making urban mobility faster, cleaner, and more efficient.
