With a brief pause in the monsoon rains on Sunday, tourists in large numbers rushed to popular weekend getaways like Sinhagad Fort and Tamhini Ghat, leading to massive traffic congestion across key routes from Pune. Visuals circulating on social media show long queues of vehicles and overcrowded tourist spots, reviving the seasonal rush that had briefly eased due to earlier downpours.
Tourists Return As Rains Recede
The pre-monsoon showers had initially triggered enthusiasm among Punekars, who traditionally flock to Mulshi, Khadakwasla, Sinhagad Fort, and Lonavala-Mahabaleshwar corridors for scenic drives and nature walks. However, heavy rains in the past two weeks had dampened the travel spirit, especially following the temporary closure of Sinhagad Fort for safety reasons.
On Sunday, with clearer skies and improved weather, tourists came out in full force. This resulted in severe bottlenecks on the Sinhagad Fort road, with traffic stretching from Sinhagad Road all the way to the foothills of the fort. A similar scenario unfolded on the Mulshi-Tamhini Ghat stretch, where long vehicle queues created chaos and delays throughout the day.
Viral Videos, Crowded Destinations
The crowding follows a recent trend where videos of Harihar Fort being overwhelmed with trekkers went viral, raising concerns about overcrowding at hill destinations during monsoon weekends.
Authorities have advised tourists to plan visits during off-peak hours and exercise caution while trekking or driving in hilly terrain. With more rain forecast in the coming weeks, officials are also expected to review crowd control measures and traffic regulation plans.
While monsoon drives and fort visits remain a cherished Pune tradition, the lack of adequate parking, narrow approach roads, and influx of weekend tourists continue to pose serious logistical and safety challenges.
Local residents and daily commuters are urging the administration to deploy additional traffic personnel and consider entry restrictions or e-permits during weekends to ease the pressure on ecologically sensitive tourist zones.
